Affordable Fireplace Makeover
The difference a little paint and tile can make is huge — your once-tired fireplace can quickly become a cozy, stylish centerpiece you’ll love showing off.
If your fireplace feels outdated, you don’t need a contractor or costly remodel. With paint, affordable tile, and a weekend, you can transform it into a stunning focal point. See below before-and-after photos of a fireplace makeover I did with my family on a flipped home, along with a step-by-step guide.
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Paint the Fireplace Surround
Paint is a game-changer — especially if your fireplace brick or surround looks outdated. Choose a high-heat paint if you’ll be painting the surround or areas close to the firebox, and a durable interior latex paint for the mantel or outer areas. Apply two coats with a brush and roller, letting each dry fully before the next. The transformation at this stage alone is often huge! For the mantel, I love to use black paint for a modern, high-contrast look.
Step 2: Update Your Tile
Tile instantly elevates your fireplace — even a small accent can make a huge difference. Apply tile around the firebox, on the hearth, or just above the mantel for visual interest. I used this white 12x24 marble-look porcelain tile from Home Depot around the firebox, and this black 12x24 stone-look slate tile for the hearth. Don’t know how to tile? For easy installation, try peel-and-stick tiles for a fast and affordable upgrade.
Step 3: Style It Up
Once everything is dry and set, style your mantel with intention. Add a mix of textures — maybe a mirror, some framed art, greenery, and a few candles. Keep it simple; you want your freshly made-over fireplace to shine!
